Foreign Languages & Literatures This school enables non-native speakers to specialize in one or more of the following languages: English, Chinese, and Japanese. The courses are designed to help students achieve proficiency in both the oral and written language and to provide them with an understanding of the experiences, values, and traditions of those peoples whose languages are studied. Students will also develop skills and knowledge in linguistics and literatures and study the cultural context of their chosen language. All subjects are career-oriented. Regarding the specialization of its curriculum, American and Canadian native professors lead and teach the students English speaking and writing. In order to specialize its characteristic as English major, moreover, the department has held English-speaking plays every year, not only to realize the bond of friendship, but also to prove the English speaking capacity of the students of the major. As the professional and scholarly activity of the major, the major provides the students with new ways of studying academe by introducing new language and literary theories, so that the students of the major can learn and master plentiful linguistic and literary knowledge as well as general art. Under the educational system of this specialized academic process, this department allows the students to improve the understanding of the profound academe of the major in learning the basic knowledge pertaining to English education. Chinese Language and Literature Major [Go to Homepage]   The purpose of the study of Chinese and Chinese literature is to bring up a competent person well grounded in Chinese and Chinese literature, not only by acquiring a wide-ranging knowledge about Chinese history, philosophy, politics, economy etc., which stand in the heart of Chinese literature and conducting a historical study of Chinese literary movements, writers and works ranging from ancient times to the present but also by pursuing an intensive study of the structure of Chinese through the analysis of the phoneme, letter, and usage of Chinese. Since 2000, the major has provided teacher's certificate programs. The major has a sister relation with Zohongyang Minzu University where students can enroll in Chinese courses for a year, students earn their required credits and live in the dormitory with Chinese students.
